BAVARIA 45CR

Lithium installation in Bavaria 45 Cruiser

In early spring 2022, a new lithium battery pack from Makspower and a Victron Multplus II 12/3000/120-32 were installed in the boat. The batteries that were chosen were 4 pcs. Makspower 150Ah 12 volt mini. These batteries have the same external dimensions as standard or ordinary 100Ah batteries and fit nicely in the battery box in the boat so that there was the most ampere hours in the least possible space.

There were 2 pcs. 12 volt AGM batteries of 240 Ah each in the boat before the battery change this winter and a 1500W /230 volt inverter that was installed in 2019. The old batteries still had plenty of capacity, but the boat is equipped with two heaters, a cool box and a fridge in addition to a microwave oven and a small washing machine that runs on 230 volts (equipped for real West Country weather!). The voltage drop across the batteries was large when there was a high load and the AGM batteries were drained far down on weekend trips and vacations. It was considered to install Lithium batteries in 2019 when the existing AGM batteries were installed, but the cost and lack of qualified professionals to do the job were at the time decisive for going for the simple solution of just replacing the batteries with new AGM batteries, and rather postpone this with Lithium batteries a little more.

The batteries and Victron Multipluss II now installed in the boat were carried out in Haugesund by Østbø Marine Elektro, the ship's electrician. The boat has its home port in Stavanger and was sailed the 27 nautical miles to Haugesund to get the job done. The boat was in Haugesund for a week while the work was carried out.

A little about the installation.

The batteries are connected in parallel with 75 square copper rails, in order to do this the batteries must stand on a completely flat surface, the bottom of the battery compartment was somewhat uneven so that a plate had to be added to the bottom to get a completely even surface. The batteries are secured with a sling edge at the bottom and a load strap above the batteries so that they are secured even if the boat is upside down. It is very important that the batteries are securely fastened. Battery installation is carried out in accordance with Norboat and the Norwegian Maritime Authority's "Installation guide for lithium batteries". But with a slightly better technical solution in terms of reliability than the installation examples found in this guide.

Multiplus-II

The Victron Multiplus II is mounted under the bench close to the batteries to avoid voltage drops and long cables. It is mounted horizontally in the bench with natural ventilation on the fuselage side from the bench in addition to two 100 mm ventilation holes from the bench to the lounge. When Victron Multiplus or Quattro is mounted horizontally, it does not get as good cooling as when it is mounted vertically on a wall, and the charging capacity of 120 amps from this inverter charger is programmed to charge 90 amps so that there are no problems with high temperatures. The original battery charger is retained so that it can be started and used together with Multiplus when needed. Charging capacity is then a total of 135 Amps!

Fuse box

230-volt cables run from the Victron Multiplus to a fuse box with ground fault circuit interrupters that supply the boat with 230V. This is set up so that there is uninterrupted power in the boat's sockets from batteries and shore power and automatic switching. The boat's water heater is automatically switched off when Multiplus is in inverter mode from the batteries so that hot water does not drain or strain the batteries. In addition, there is a simple socket that receives power from the shore power connection outside the Victron Multiplus so that when the Multiplus is switched off, there is still the possibility of power in the boat for a little heat or dehumidifier.

Cargo

Charging of the batteries from the engine comes from Volvo Penta's 115Amp Mitsubishi alternator. It is not necessary to make any modifications to these alternators to charge Lithium batteries. The boat was originally fitted with an electronic charging diode with three outputs to charge the starter battery, the battery for the bow propeller and the consumer batteries. This was mounted in the engine room and was replaced with a Victron Agrofet 200/3. The alternator now charges the batteries in a warm state with 76 Amps with an engine speed of 1500-2000Rpm. This is good capacity for an originally fitted alternator. However, the charging capacity of the alternator is a little small for a battery capacity of 600Ah. But if this turns out to be too small, the boat will be sailed to Haugesund again in the fall for the installation of a Makspower MP200 alternator that will be able to provide an effective charging current of 150-160 Amps.
