Solar panels or alternator, what's best?

Enough power in your boat means a comfortable vacation. Power problems mean unnecessary stress when we should be relaxing.

We know that we need a lot of power to have a comfortable vacation. Electricity consumption varies greatly if we are at rest, under sail with instruments, heater and autopilot in use. It also varies whether we have one or two refrigerators, are in hot climates or on a long voyage.

When the batteries start to run out, how do we charge them as quickly as possible?

Here we consider two well-known charging sources, solar panels and dynamos

Solar panels

Must have sun, dislikes shade, it is not always sunny, can drain the battery bank when the sun is shining.

Powerful dynamo

Predictable charging, recharges as much or more than a day's worth of solar charging in an hour's time.

Are you on a long trip where the sun is stable, solar panels are a great solution. In the banner on our website you can see a picture of a Dufor 430, 43 foot sailboat. This boat was anchored for weeks during the corona period without being able to move. With a solid solar cell system (400 watts), the boat was self-propelled. The fridge and watermaker were powered by electricity from the solar panels. It was never necessary to charge the Makspower lithium batteries with the alternator. Shore power was not available either.

On holiday in the Nordic countries
It can charge well with a good solar cell system here in the north. We got more than 100 Ah on a good day with 2 x Makspower 80 watt Semirigid solar panels placed on the deck and angled towards the sun. We have moved the solar panels after the sun throughout the day for optimal angle and charging. In the evening, we set the solar panels towards the sunrise to charge in the morning sun.
If you have larger panels, it charges more. Remember that these were optimal conditions. If there is a veil of clouds, charging is significantly reduced.
If there's no sun, there's no charging either. As we know from experience, the weather is unpredictable and so is charging.

Placement of solar panels

Regardless of whether the solar panels are shade-optimized or not, they are very vulnerable to shadows. On the deck of a sailboat, shadows are everywhere and they move during sailing, when the boat turns at anchor and when the sun moves in the sky.

Installing the solar panels on the cabin roof or hatch garage, you get very little out of the panels. Solar panels are also prone to damage when they are stepped on. Although the manufacturer of the solar panels claims that they can be stepped on, it's only a matter of time before they break. Thin and flexible panels are particularly vulnerable.

Glue the panels to the deck, you won't get Sikafleks or other adhesives when the panels need to be replaced.
If you screw down the panels, there will always be marks and holes.

Consider Velcro tape instead. It sits well and the glue can be washed away later. The galecoat will be slightly discolored under the glue, but it can be bleached with galecoat cleaner.

Targa bar on the hedge is an efficient way to mount solar panels. There is little shade and you can utilize the solar panel during sailing, for the engine and when the boat is at rest.

Solar cells are an excellent addition to drain the battery bank when you're in port.

If the solar panels are placed facing the sun, you get the most out of them. If the solar panels are moved behind the sun, you will achieve maximum output. Shadows from masts, walls, falls and other factors reduce performance more than you think. If the panels are placed on the deck, they are exposed to shade, trampling and damage. It's better to have a small panel facing the sun than a large panel on deck.
However, there must be sunshine for the solar panels to charge.

Example: We got just over 100 Ah with 2 x Makspower 80 watt Semirigid panels that were aimed at the sun throughout the day. There was maximum sun that day. The next day it was cloudy.

Charging with Volvo and Yanmar alternators, twice as fast charging with upgraded alternators

The Volvo engine is usually equipped with either a 60 A or 115 A alternator. They charge at 40 and 70-80 amps respectively. The Mitsbushi 115 A alternator works well with lithium batteries and is one of the best standard alternators on the market.
Normal consumption over a couple of days quickly adds up to 2-300 ampere hours. If you want to recharge with a 60 A (max 40 A in practice) alternator, you have to run the engine for hours. The Mitsubishi 115 A alternator does it much faster.

Two to three hours of charging at 40 A is roughly equivalent to what you get in a day if you have approx. 200 watts of solar panels, if there is sun.
One to two hours of driving with the Mitsubishi dynamo and you have charged more than the solar panel can offer.

Twice as fast charging
Both alternators can be upgraded to Makspower VP 100 and Makspower MP 200 alternators respectively. An upgrade results in approximately twice as fast charging.

Read more about alternators for upgrading here.

For Yanmar, we offer the Makspower MP 100 alternator.

Older Yanmar engines usually have a 55 A alternator or the well-known Hitachi 80 alternator. Both alternators are very lazy and usually deliver less than 40 amps.
The Makspower MP 100 alternator delivers from 85 to just over 100 amps, depending on cable dimensions, cable lengths and battery type. Lithium batteries have a big advantage over lead batteries when it comes to accepting a charge.

Conclusion and Makspower's recommendation

If you are comparing the price of a good solar cell package against an alternator upgrade, our recommendation is to study the new alternator carefully. An alternator is not dependent on either sun or location. Makspower's alternators charge very well at idle, a lot at cruising speed and do not need sun.

Makspower has three alternators for upgrading Volvo and Yanmar engines. Read more on our website.
